The Building Sustainable Communities Program created repeat outdoor education, leadership development, and neighborhood creative placemaking opportunities for National City, CA high school youth in 2021. Olivewood provided a year-long internship and job skills training opportunities for local youth embedded within urban agriculture, health and nutrition education, and community engagement. Youth led a community-based design process that promotes access to the outdoors, health, and cultural vitality within a local outdoor space. With this project, development and stewardship of the community space was in the hands and decision-making power of youth. Rooted in outdoor learning, health, creativity, resiliency, and sustainability, the purpose is to develop youth leaders who are inspired to create community change by activating outdoor spaces through agriculture, health, art, and culture.
